This Week in Indie Publishing History - Henry Thoreau's WALDEN
156 years ago yesterday Thoreau self-published Walden. In general, Henry did not care for technology. I've got to wonder what he would have thought of the Internet, given this: "We are in great haste to construct a magnetic telegraph from Maine to Texas; but Maine and Texas, it may be, have nothing important to communicate." Still, my hunch is he'd like the digital tools that today enable indie publishers and indie authors to do great, innovative work without having to bow to corporate behemoths. The first printing of Walden (2,000 copies) was published by Ticknor & Fields of Boston, but at Thoreau's own expense. You'll find all of Thoreau's writings here.
